I am back with another “Top Essentials” post. This time we are talking about spices and everything nice. The first post in this series was “My Top 5 Kitchen Essentials”, where I talked about 5 things in the kitchen I cannot be without. You can read that post here.
Curry Powder
This is my number #1 staple spice in my kitchen. I always add a sprinkle to every savory dish that I cook. It adds layers of spices to your meals thanks to all the spices in curry powder itself. This spice blend gives even the simplest of dishes a complex flavor.
Curry powder is a savory spice blend that consists of many dried spices that are ground together. Every place/region around the world that uses curry powder as a spice in cooking has there own unique spice blend. Some families even have their own secret ingredient or process (including mine) for making curry powder. We have a TOP secret recipe for our curry powder.
Cayenne Pepper
I am a big fan of anything hot and spicy. I use the powdered form sprinkled on top of my finished meals and the fresh habaneros pepper in the food itself. I usually throw in a piece of habanero in a pot of stewed beans. This gives the beans a nice little kick. Don`t worry these little hot flakes are jam-packed with some pretty hot stuff that is very good for the body. Here are 3 health benefits of cayenne pepper.

⦁ Anti-inflammatory
⦁ Clears Congestion (ever had watery eyes and a runny nose while eating your favorite spicy dish?)
⦁ Increases Circulation
Turmeric
Looking for a natural way to add some color to your meals?? Just add a sprinkle of turmeric powder.
Turmeric is what gives curry powder its deep rich yellow color. You may wonder what gives turmeric its bright yellow color right? The answer is Curcumin, which is a phytochemical compound that you can also find in curry powder as well. Turmeric gives a beautiful bright yellow color to your dishes.
Ground turmeric powder actually comes from the root of the turmeric plant that has been dried and ground into a fine powder. Turmeric is actually the root of the plant itself.
I always add a light sprinkle to my baked macaroni, stewed chickpeas, and rice. I simply cannot cook these dishes without adding a healthy sprinkle for that signature yellow color and flavor.
This post will be incomplete if I didn’t share with you at least 2 of the amazing health benefits of turmeric.
