One of the ways I make plant-based a lifestyle is by extending from the plate and into the home. That is by taking steps to eliminate using chemicals that are harmful to both people and the environment as a whole. Practices such as making your own stove-top cleaner with three household essentials that – one, you already have, two – you can pronounce, and three – contain no strong chemicals or aerosols bring about a greener way of living.
We cook delicious, healthy, meals on our stoves. So let`s use the same mentality as part of the cleaning process as well.
I recommend doing this at least once a month to prevent a substantial buildup. If you are like me and you use your stove daily, then once a month works very well.
To make you will need the following 3 items. Odds are you already have all these items in the kitchen or bathroom cabinets or your house. I will share with you the brands I use as well for reference. Any brand will do just fine.
Baking Soda -my go-to inexpensive brand is Arm and Hammer
Dishwashing Liquid – I personally use Ivory classic scent dishwashing liquid. You can find it on Amazon
Hydrogen Peroxide – You can find this in the pharmacy or cleaning section at stores. I get mine from the dollar tree. The brand I use is Equate.
You will also need a kitchen cloth and a soft kitchen scrubby. Whatever you do, please do not go using one of those stainless steel scrubbies or you can kiss your glass goodbye.
You need a scrubby that is tough enough to get any burnt-on food off and soft enough to not scratch the glass. There is one that I personally 101% recommend for this project.
These handmade kitchen scrubbies work wonders on the stove, dishes, and even my non-stick baking pans. They come in so many colors to match your kitchen aesthetic and you get a set of 3. You can find them here.
This task can be completed in under 1 hour and 30-45 minutes of that is hands-off time, so can do other chores during that 30-45 minutes.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by mixing together ¼ cup of Baking Soda, a drop of dishwashing liquid, and some Hydrogen Peroxide until you have a runny paste. (The hydrogen peroxide is your liquid here, so add until you have a runny mixture).
- Evenly spread the mixture on your glass ceramic flat top. I use my hands to spread the mixture.
- Let the mixture sit on the stove for 30-45 minutes.
- Use your kitchen scrubby dipped in warm water. Work out any burnt-on food, watermarks, or stains.
- With a damp kitchen cloth, wipe off all the mixture. Rinsing the cloth in warm water.
- I like to go over the stove once more time with my kitchen cloth or scrubby and warm soapy water to remove streaks caused by the baking soda.
I like to do this cleaning once every month to prevent a “harder to clean” stove. Even though sometimes I do not remember or make the time to do so every month and it shows. 🙂
