13 Days of Spices – Day 12 Cayenne

For Day 12 we are heating things up with Cayenne. If you ask me what goes into every savory meal I cook, the answer would be cayenne. You will find a healthy amount of cayenne pepper sprinkled on my finished plate. Welcome back to 13 Days of Spices. A series where we cover 13 different spices over 13 days here on my blog. You can find all the post in this series here. Let`s learn, shall we?

Cayenne (Capsicum annuum) thrive in warm climates and its bright red fruit is used fresh or powdered to add a kick of heat. You can use cayenne in its fresh form in all savory dishes such as beans/peas, rice dishes, roasted vegetables, stir-fry – basically any dish that needs a little heat to bring it all together. The ground form can be utilized in dry spices mixes and after serving according to the eater preference and tolerance for heat. The compound capsaicin that is found in cayenne gives it the heat factor. Talk about hot.

Repel mice, rats, and roach – the strong, pungent, hot smell of cayenne has been effective in repelling such pests.
