Natures yellow food coloring coming the form of a root. Yes, that is right. Turmeric is bright yellow root that will add a bright yellow color to your meals (and your hands). Welcome back to 13 Days of Spices. A series where we cover 13 different spices over 13 days from December 8 – 20. For Day 10 we are learning about the colorful yellow root – Turmeric.

Turmeric (Curcuma Ionga) is member of the ginger family, considering that both ginger and turmeric are both root spices. The bright yellow powder is created by grinding the dry roots into a fine powder.

Turmeric might be most popular known as what gives curry its bright yellow color and it one the most versatile and flavorful ways you can use turmeric in your kitchen.

Grate a piece of fresh turmeric to add an appetizing yellow color and aromatic flavor to rice dishes.

Make turmeric a part of your seasoning mix in either the fresh or powdered form.

Add to any curried dishes for that unique flavor and hallmark bright yellow color.
